The Snake River valley in eastern Washington is only green for a few weeks each year. That normally occurs in March. Since I live on the Palouse that is about 1700 feet higher; March is usually still locked in winter. So it is nice to go down to the river to experience a bit of spring. This part of the river gets very little traffic except during the summer and the fall. So it is a time when one can just enjoy birds.

Hooded Mergansers, small diving ducks not often seen except in woodland ponds. This is a short documentary on one pair that used our secluded pond, mated, and raised ducklings in a nest-box. It takes about a month to hatch the eggs, but only a day to leave the nest. After leaving the nest, mother merganser showed the ducklings a few of the local sights, then left the pond to take them to the main river where they begin life in the wild.
