Because Our Cause Is Just is an eye-opening documentary about the struggle of women in countries experiencing the so-called “Arab Spring.” Begun as a civil movement of women and men seeking human rights and justice after decades of dictatorship, the revolutionary wave has not yielded justice for all. Instead, the political openings caused by these revolts have been exploited by Islamist groups who seek to not only exclude women from the political process but to remove them from public life through intimidation, oppressive legislation, and even physical violence. Through powerful interviews with women human rights defenders from the Middle East and beyond, Women’s Learning Partnership joined with award-winning filmmakers Deb Bergeron and Kim Connell to reveal how women are continuing to fight for the right to be part of their countries’ evolving political systems. By examining the consequences of inequality, the film underscores the connection between the fate of democracy in the Middle East-North Africa region and the future of global security in the post-9/11 era. Because Our Cause Is Just ends with a way forward: the realization by men and women in the region that democracy without rights for women and minorities is not real democracy, and that only real democracy will bring dignity and peace to their nations and to the world.

Torture and ill-treatment continue to occur all over the world and these human rights violations remain too often unpunished. Torture can affect any man, woman and child. It can take many features and can be inflicted in the name of national security or counter-terrorism, in the fight against organised crime or drug cartels or to repress social protests. But in the large majority of cases it is used against persons detained on ordinary criminal charges, notably to extract confession or obtain information, and disproportionally on those belonging to minorities, marginal groups or the poor. This video calls on people to speak out against torture under the motto "Nothing can justify torture under any circumstances". Anyone, anywhere can do something to support the global fight against torture and ill-treatment.
