In CIRCA, a young woman walks into a circled enclosure and begins to strike a stick against a dilapidated white picket fence. Making CIRCA was a way of coping with the death of my younger sister, Glory, who passed away from a brain hemorrhage. My intention was to make a meditative piece that conveyed the sense of closeness that I still feel towards my sister, while also bringing attention to the divide that keeps us apart. In Spanish, the word 'cerca,' can mean one of two things, nearness, as in proximity, or a fence; both words derive from the Latin word, 'circa.' Latin is a dead language, but it is not an extinct language. The same is true of the last element of my piece; Morse code, which audibly spells out the word, 'circa,' when the branch runs along the fence. Circa is also used for uncertain, or approximate, dates, i.e. c.33 AD. In this context, circa represents the unknown date in the future, the date I reunite with my sister. The striking of the crumbling fence serves as a reminder of our frailty, our mortality. The very act of living is striking the crumbling fence.

Digital simulations of analog processes don't always go as planned. In fact, some attempts at creating such simulations could be described as akin to trying to play a piano with a boulder. (Although, John Cage might still approve.)
