    • FIELDWORK - Hope Island - Comb Jellies

      from Charles Lindsay / Added

FIELDWORK - is an edit from the comb jelly videos shot this past summer in and around Bull Harbor, Hope Island, British Columbia. This is raw material for coming installations and environments. The sound is built from field recordings made at Hope Island, with hydrophones, contact mics, parabolic mics. Audio processing was accomplished with the Monome ARC4 and 'GrainChild' / Ableton Live software built by Alec Brady, and with Glitchmachines 'Cataract' and Expert Sleepers 'Spectral Conquest.' This work owes a great deal to my host and Captain of the ship 'Moondance' aka Dave Olsen. Comb Jellies recently initiated a radical re-drawing of the tree of life, from the bottom up. The audio can be heard here: https://soundcloud.com/charlies-experiment/fieldwork-comb-jellies-2014 More information: http://www.nature.com/news/2011/110907/full/news.2011.520.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ctenophora http://blogs.kqed.org/science/2014/06/02/comb-jelly-dna-studies-are-changing-how-scientists-think-animals-evolved/

Here is a a remix/rework of the incredible Nils Frahm's album track You, which I have entered into a competition set up by the man himself to mark his 30th birthday. See here if you too want to rework some of the album Screws yourself (its my favourite...so far) http://reworked.nilsfrahm.com A bit about my rework: You was blasted across the water from an amplifier strapped to a small dinghy. The sound was then captured from a boat not far away via a homemade string telephone...the sound carried via the telephone was recorded using a hydrophone. The ebb and flow of the sound of the piano was created by the push and pull of the dinghy as it sits in the water and tightens the string telephone, revealing the sound as it moves. You was simultaneously filmed underwater and the 'remix' that I have created is a blend of the two sound sources.\ Listen out for the barking dog and bleating horn from a neighbouring sailboat, somewhere out in the channel. It's amazing what you can hear under there!

These are some excerpts of my work I showed in the exhibition called "Gaze" in Cologne. It deals with the fascination of the aquarium and the TV and its mass culture. The sound was recorded with a hydrophone and I projected onto rear projection Plexiglas. [15:04 min]

A short film collaboration with visual artist Chrissy Hazell. The score has been crafted from manipulated found sounds, recycled sound and an improvised final layer of vocal, piano, clarinet and guitar. The relationship between the visual element and the sound element developed over time, as each new layer affected the next. The result is an audio visual collaboration which attempts to capture a moment.

The Whale’s Love Life is a self produced experiment in combining the heart of simple songwriting with field recordings and found sounds. Each song has its own sound bed, where layers of textures, sounds and manipulated field recordings reveal and embellish the lyrical content of the songs. Sounds and vocal arrangements have been re – amplified underwater, over water and in the field. Instruments have been recorded underneath wind turbines in railway tunnels, under the pier and in the bathroom.

A hydrophone recording of a malfunctioning Broadband box captured on the pavement of a Brighton street is the source inspiration for the composition and film The weight of, the repeated pulsing sound is blasted over and captured underneath the water in my bathroom. The film was shot in one take and the musical composition is an improvised response to the sounds re - amplified and captured within the tiled walls.
