We are pleased to share with you to our 2011 Pinchot Institute for Conservation Distinguished Lecture. Our esteemed speaker this year was Ambassador Stuart Eizenstat, who spoke on Forest Conservation and Climate Change: U.S. Role in International and Domestic Policy. In his role as head of Covington & Burling’s international practice, and through more than a decade of public service in three US administrations, he has provided critically important leadership on US and international climate policy, and in particular on addressing the substantial role that deforestation plays in adding to greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. As Under Secretary of State in the Clinton Administration, he led the US delegation in the negotiation of the Kyoto Protocol. Reducing emissions from deforestation became a contentious issue in these negotiations, and ultimately this was left out of the Kyoto Protocol. Since that time, he has worked steadfastly to fill this gap and bring deforestation into the further development of international climate policy through the UNFCCC processes and through numerous government, private, and NGO initiatives. Due in part to his sustained leadership, significant progress was made on reducing emissions from deforestation and degradation during the recent Conferences of Parties in Copenhagen and Cancún. The 2011 Pinchot Distinguished Lecture took place on Friday, February 25, 2011 in Washington DC. The Lecture Series is made possible by generous support from MeadWestvaco, our Host Committee, and the Pinchot Associates. To learn more, visit our website at: www.pinchot.org
