Sometimes called "O Waly, Waly", this is a traditional Scottish folk song, based on lyrics that partly date to the XVII century. This arrangement has been inspired by the James Taylor's stunning version, incuded in his album "New Moon Shine", published in 1991 by CBS Records.

Yesterday evening I watched a concert on TV. It was a tribute to James Taylor, the well known and respected american folk style singer and songwriter. I have always enjoyed James Taylor's songs and felt inspired to record my own practice play along tribute to "Shower the People", which James wrote and recorded in 1976 on his "In the Pocket" Album. It was the opening track and topped out at #22 on the Billboard Hot 100. The version I chose to play along to was that recorded by Phil Perry on his 2008 Album, "Ready for Love". I like Phil's version and I particularly wanted to play along with a clean modern recording for reasons of clarity. The reasons date back to my recent play along, which I recorded to Lionel Richie's "Easy". It revealed some problems with the Ableton 9 Lite audio recording software, with its Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 USB interface to my PC. I experienced some background noises on the original track, which we at first assumed were the result of an old mp3 recording sound file. It transpired that the problem lay with too many background programs on my PC trying to access the Intel i7 980X 33.3 MHz central processor at the same time. I have to thank my good friend Geoff Bryan for his diagnosis and subsequent help. Here's the potted history of the problem: I finally plucked up my courage with both hands and went through the entire process on my PC, via the advice given on the link page put on the web via Ableton, the authors of my audio recording replay playback software package, which I use in conjunction with my Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 USB audio interface: https://www.ableton....timize-windows/ I could not get the recommended ASIO4ALL driver to work with my setup. It repeatedly caused Windows 7 64 bit to blue screen and crash. This is clearly a memory stack conflict problem. Perhaps it is just that the ASIO4ALL driver is not compatible with my Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 hardware? I used the basic provided ASIO driver, (instead of the Direct X driver which had originally auto installed). I use it together with the Focusrite device driver for my USB sound interface. It seems to run reliably. I went into the MS system analysis per the advice on the same web page and disabled or removed any start up programs that I did not need. I did that with my heart in my mouth and not without some trepidation, but it worked out OK. (He said with his fingers firmly crossed behind his back!). I followed the advice about setting the windows screen view to its most basic presentation. It doesn't look as exciting, but it certainly works far better and noticeably faster. It makes far less demands on my Intel i 7 980 processor (which is running at 3.33GHz.) It took some time to figure out how to increase the latency buffer size. Eventually, I set the buffer size to 20.0 ms, via the on-screen Scarlett Mixer Control. This equates to a maximum buffer size of 1024 samples. It was the most it would let me have, even though I have 12Gb of system RAM. Finally I downloaded the on-line Latency Monitor and Latency Checker analysis tools as advised by Ableton, which showed my PC can easily handle video and audio sequences without any interruptions. Last of all, I fired up Ableton 9 Lite and put into it an original m4a sound file of an audio track, which has previously demonstrated the same delay and distortion problems we encountered on the "Easy" track. I used a version of "Shower the People" by Phil Perry, which is very clean and will show up any sound discrepancies. It played just fine. I recorded a fairly complex bass part along with it and on playback noticed it was absolutely clean. Next I need to fire up the Corel Pinnacle Studio 17.6 video software and my Panasonic camera in web cam mode, at the same time as the Ableton sound software and see if that upsets anything. I already feel confident that it should be AOK, but I would not know for certain until I tried it out. I've had enough for now, but I feel I am within a hairs breadth of resolving the computer processor clock conflict problem which was clearly affecting the sound of my recordings. I forgot to say, that I've tried the sound recording process both with and without my Trend Micro Titanium security software running. I can report that it does not appear to affect the recording quality, whether it is switched on or off. That pleased me. I didn't fancy running any computer without security software, particularly as I am connected to hi speed fibre broadband. This accompanying video is the result of my computer changes. I recorded it in somewhat of a hurry, without much dedicated practice. I'm pleased with the improved sound quality. I hope you enjoy it too. ;o)
