This is an excerpt from the play "Korczak's Children" performed by WBHS's Vagabond Players. Henryk Goldszmit, who later became known under his pen name, Janusz Korczak, was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1879. He later became a children’s author, Polish-Jewish educator, and pediatrician. In 1911, he became the director of Dom Sierot, an orphanage in Warsaw. On August 5, 1942, the orphanage, along with the rest of the ghetto, was marched to a train platform where they were shoved tightly into a windowless, sealed cattle car. From there, they were taken to the Treblinka death camp and were never heard of again. Despite the fact that Korczak was offered escape multiple times, he always refused. He chose to stay with his children and his inspiring story will live on forever. Korczak died with his children in a gas chamber in Treblinka, but with his brave efforts, he and the victims of the Holocaust will never be forgotten.
