A sequel to our previous video 'Banded Jawfish Pair': After gaining their trust and whitnessing multiple broods from the same pair in a few short weeks, we find the female has left, the brooding season over. We treat the male to a feast to thank him for all his hard work, and for trusting us during the past few weeks. With our lights attracting all manner of little critters, the male Banded Jawfish is presented with a welcome buffet within 24hours of his last mouthbrood - and he takes full advantage of it until he's stuffed to the brim! We checked on him the next day, just to be sure he didn't out-do himself, but there he was, perfectly content. Thanks again little guy. I picked up a blue spot jawfish yesterday at the LFS after debating on spending the money for quite some time, read alot about them, decided to pull the trigger after ordering the Fish Saver from InTank. Man, I love that fish! So much personality! Video is two parts - first part was last night as he settled in and made his cave ( hand held - sorry - didn't think he'd start to soon! ), second part was this morning at feeding time. - No I don't usually feed that much, I bought a new food and didn't realize how condensed it was! Enjoy! - Clowns names are "Todd Crane" and "Auntie Kris" , Tang is "Wu" , Shrimp is "Bruiser" and the Jawfish is "Lord Disick" - yes, my wife named them :)

During a afternoon dive at Blue Heron Bridge we discovered an unusual jawfish. Excited to find one just starting his burrow, I was intrigued by his bright blue lips and body markings. I thought it might be a juvenile phase that would change with maturity-but was surprised to learn it was an unusual fish for that area. A mustache jawfish; Opisthognathus lonchurus Look for the orange "mustache" down each cheek. Always something underwater to renew our sense of wonder. I donated a nearby spiny scallop shell half as a house warming gift that he seemed to enjoy immensely. Welcome to BHB my colorful friend! Special thanks to our friends at SFUPS and George Burgess for confirming the identification.

One hundred and thirty million years ago, what we now know as the Peninsula of Baja California began drifting away from mainland Mexico. As the two land masses separated, they created a large interior sea. Five million years ago, the mouth of this sea began to open ,allowing the cold waters coming from the North Pole (now known as the California Current) to mix in with warm waters coming from the tropics (the Equatorial Current). This mixing bowl created one of the most productive seas in the world: the Gulf of California or Sea of Cortés; named after the famous Spanish Conquistador. This video was designed as educational material and was not created for Profit Purposes as stipulated by the mission of the Gulf of California Marine Program at SIO.
