The mural was designed specifically for this site, to complement and enliven the neighborhood, with its growing arts scene and distinctive local businesses, providing a fun attraction for the block and making it even more of a destination just 8 miles from downtown Washington, DC. It was commissioned in 2012 by local business owner Mike Franklin (Franklin’s Restaurant, Brewery & General Store, 5121 Baltimore Ave, Hyattsville, MD), with a matching grant from The City of Hyattsville Commercial Facade Improvement Program. Concept, painting and light show programming by Liz LaManche (Earthsign.com), lighting system engineering by Carl Gruesz.

DLECTRICITY is Detroit's newest festival of light and art, happening Oct. 5 & 6, 2012. Visit www.DLECTRICITY.com for more information. Community Beacons are exciting interactive sculptures that leverage the potentials of music and analog technology to enliven communities with joyous expressions of rhythm and light. The Beacons are drums: essentially user-powered light and sound instruments that light up when played without batteries or external power. When they are played - banged, hit and tapped - the vibrations from the drumhead are converted to electricity by the speaker transducer. Players will discover and experiment with complex energy relationships through the drums’ simple mechanics. During Dlectricity there will be choreographed performances, including the original “Thunderclap” by Paul Cox and his arrangement of “Liftoff” by Russell Peck. After each performance, the drums will be available to the public for interaction  and the exploration of human-generated power.
