Mothers Of Purl creates a space for weaving traditional craft skills, notions of function and the crafted art object . The project began in March 2008 during my artist residency with Multi-story, Street Level Photowork's collaborative arts programme based in Springburn, North Glasgow. The group exists on several levels, one being a local knitting group which meets to support the immediate community establish links with eachother and the second being a springboard for Craft Happenings, of which there have been three to date. Craft Happenings are events I put on that encourage communities to come together and make connections, share stories and skills through knitting, crochet and embroidery. Craft-based artists are part of the event to support people, teach and also show their crafted artworks, thus creating opportunities for people to explore and question the role of the crafted object, process and function. I treat these events like live performances, craft-based artworks that focus on the process of communication and making. There is often a live video feed projected elsewhere in the area, away from the knitters. Hands are filmed close-up, the projection thus showing giant knitting needles, hands and wool, the hands seemingly like an independant being with a distinct personality as the knitted peice grows and takes shape. http://www.lippi.org

Did photography replace an absence in her life or expose the truth of her heart’s emptiness? While growing in confidence as a photographer, eighteen-year-old Jessie Ann Gaebele’s personal life is at a crossroads. Hoping she’s put an unfortunate romantic longing behind her as “water under the bridge,” she exiles herself to Milwaukee to operate photographic studios for those owners who have fallen ill with mercury poisoning. Jessie gains footing in her dream to one day operate her own studio and soon finds herself in other Midwest towns, pursuing her profession. But even a job she loves can’t keep painful memories from seeping into her heart when the shadows of a forbidden love threaten to darken the portrait of her life. http://waterbrookmultnomah.com/catalog.php?isbn=9781578569816
