The Map Squad is a Self Advocacy group; a collective of people with and without learning disabilities. Its work is trailblazing and award winning, they’re exceptionally creative with the little resources they have and they offer genuine workable solutions to reversing the idea that care needs to be passive to be cost effective. Even so, like many other organizations in the sector they have been facing stiff resistance and external logistical barriers to funding, namely ongoing issues with the transfer to personal budgets. Earlier this year they were hours from closing their doors for good. Their contract was renewed in the final hours of the final day, long after redundancies had been served. Having faced off imminent danger, the organization has re drawn their business model and further scaled back their operations. The hard reality is that they have a small amount of funding until November and without a substantial amount of new money and big support they will be be back facing closure once again.

At a mental health convention in Canada, Michael Scott Karpovich was invited to be the keynote speaker. This program was so well received that Michael was the highest rated speaker for the entire event. Michael provided both humor and information, entertainment and education... it proved to be a brilliant program. At this event there were teachers, social workers, psychologists and a lot of their learning disabled clients.
