Echoing a method frequently used at e-waste dumps in West-Africa and China to extract valuable metals from electronic waste, circuit boards from obsolete mobile phones are melted down on a hot plate. The circuits are connected to electrodes on my body with electricity wires. Electric currents are modulated by the circuit boards, and used to activate my muscles. As a result of the melting of the circuits, the contraction patterns of my muscles change and are eventually interrupted. The notion of the cyborg is usually associated with state-of-the art technology and utopian visions of empowerment (cf. Robocop, Stelarc, Haraway’s manifesto, etc.). Constructing a cyborgian system with a human body connected to discarded and obsolete electronics, rather than state of the art new devices, Waste Circuits seeks to explore human-machine hybridity in the context of the material consequences of a culture of compulsive technological innovation, driven by planned obsolescence.
