Prince Tamino sets off to find his place in the wide world. He undergoes a journey during which his abilities are tested, his assumptions are challenged, and his world is expanded at every turn. Mozart’s great opera asks more questions than it answers, and despite its basic opposition of light versus dark, things aren’t always black and white. The Queen’s feelings are all too understandable, and at times Sarastro’s motives are a bit murky. So despite the fantastical nature of its characters and situations, "The Magic Flute" bursts with humanity, in all it messy and chaotic glory. The sheer variety of music Mozart wrote for this opera is a clue that he sought to encompass the whole world within its pages. Join the School of Music for a staging of this classic opera, sung in English. (North Park University, Chicago, is a nonprofit institution preparing students for lives of significance and service.)
