The Heart of New Ulm is a project designed to reduce the number of heart attacks that occur in the New Ulm area over the next 10 years. This means helping residents improve their health risks, such as physical activity, nutrition, obesity, or tobacco use, among others. The project will involve community education, medical interventions and environmental changes. The project is being led by Allina Hospitals & Clinics, a health care system, instead of the government. As a result, it will likely serve to change the way health care is viewed and delivered across the country. In other words, it could result in the entire health care system shifting its focus toward preventive care. The Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation is working in close partnership with Allina and the New Ulm medical Center (NUMC) to support this project in the New Ulm Community. Markymarkmedia is the video producer for this project.

Nestled among his many acres of Gladiolas, Carl Fischer, a passionate floriculturist from St. Charles, MN, is considered one of the leading experts in hybridizing Gladiolas. He is widely known as the Gladiola Man. This Emmy award-winning story is one of my favorite stories that I shot, edited and co-produced with the legendary reporter, Ken Speake, from KARE 11. It aired as a KARE 11 Extra. I am most proud of the fact that we did not get in the way of the story -- instead we allowed Carl to tell his own story and share his deep spiritual conviction with his own words. He taught us a lot about life, to enjoy heaven now, to make it our "life's work." Carl has since passed away but his spirit remains in all of us. In August, the town of St. Charles hosts a Gladiolus Days festival not only to honor his many Glads that he produced but his remarkable spirit for life. I can honesty say that in all of my years as a video producer and storyteller, Carl ranks as one of the most unique and loving characters I have ever had the privilege to meet.

If the world were 100 people, 78 would have daily access to electricity. Unfortunately, nearly 70% of all that energy worldwide comes from fossil fuels. Experts say that there are enough renewable energy sources to power our planet indefinitely. What can we do to make better use of them?

This is an Emmy award winning story that I produced with John Barr from KSTP-TV. This story reaches deeply into the plight of the American farmer and found one man who has become somewhat of a prophet for other farmers from the heartland.
