Following the renaming ceremony of Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism’s building as Pulitzer Hall on April 20, a celebratory event and cocktail party were held in Miller Theatre and Low Library on the Columbia University campus, to officially kick off the school’s centennial. The program began with opening remarks by Dean Nicholas Lemann and the premiere of the school’s centennial film, produced by filmmaker Jesse Dylan and his production company Wondros. Michael Pulitzer, a grandson of Joseph Pulitzer; Martina Guzman ’08, Community Reporter at WDET Public Radio in Michigan; and emcee A’Lelia Bundles ’76, author and former Deputy Washington Bureau Chief at ABC News, spoke about their connection to the school. Robert Caro, a Carnegie Fellow at the Journalism School in 1968, spoke last, describing his fellowship at Columbia and how it provided time and resources he needed to craft “The Power Broker,” his seminal biography of urban planner Robert Moses that won the Pulitzer Prize. Caro was selected as one of the Journalism School’s 50 Great Stories, compiled for the centennial. http://www.journalism.columbia.edu/news/671

The Schöneweide video brings viewers to a struggling neighborhood in Berlin that lost more than 20 thousand industrial jobs once East and West Germany reunified in 1989. Though only several hundred jobs remain today, residents interviewed in the video call Schöneweide home and refuse to abandon it despite the challenges of living there. Because of their unique pasts, Detroit and Berlin are faced with scores of abandoned properties, which most cities can't even contemplate. As these two iconic cities move forward, they make decisions about what to do with abandoned buildings, churches, airports, parks, plots of land and houses. They can be torn down, they can fall into disarray, they can be preserved or they can be repurposed. Sometimes the government decides what to do with these buildings and sometimes its’ the people. Either way, as decisions are made about what to do with each of these properties, new landscapes and new identities for these cities are shaped. This video is part of The Detroit-Berlin Connection.
