'Long Hilly' leads through Chinese and European gold sluicing operations that date back to 1874. Fascinating walk, I couldn't to the mines justice so you need to walk it yourself to see them. This is 10x5 because I couldn't squash it into 5x5! The sign says 2 and 1/4 hours but with stops, it only took us 1 hour.

HD Video, 05:20, col. Stereo, 16:9 Music: Les Éclairs (aka Freya Hattenberger & Peter Simon) 2012 A highway in the vicinity of Flanders, Nothern France. A field in the median strip. Attracted by the iridescent blue of the blueweed (echium) I delved into the filed in the median strip with the video camera. There an ecological niche has established. The gravel of the median strip consists of excavation material from the nearby heap. Leftovers from the Mining Company in Lens. On such ground Blueweed flourishes particularly well. These plants are important food for bumblebees and bees. Surrounded by over speeding cars left and right there in the middle lane the activity of insects is as just as busy. However, each cosmos has it´s own time - the bumblebee time, the auto time. While I explore these universes in such a field, I step into a skeleton on the gound. Whilst gaining foothold in the bones and cadaver of an animal, the perception of the landscape reverses. From the idyll of the " flower island " in the middle of the highway towards one of Europe´s largest graves. Against the backdrop of war in this territory a poppy is dancing in the wind. A batteld field scenery.

In Western Sahara decades of conflict between the POLISARIO Front, Morocco, and Mauritania, has left the land divided. The border that separates the land controlled by the POLISARIO Front, from that controlled by the Moroccan military, is known as the berm, and is considered the worlds longest minefield. Decades of conflict between the Moroccans and the POLISARIO has seen a majority of the lands native inhabitants, the Sahrawi, seek refuge in neighboring Algeria. Landmines and bombs litter the landscape, and the few that remain on the land risk disfigurement or death on a daily basis. Under a UN brokered ceasefire the NGO Action on Armed Violence now leads the way, clearing the land and making it safe for its people to return from exile.

Almost 425,000 mines are implanted in Lebanese soil. BLOM Bank, in close collaboration with the Lebanese Army and Mastercard, works to remove mines with each swipe of the BLOM Demining Purchase Card. In June 2012, 55,000 mines were removed in just 2 years and more than 1000 trees were planted in the newly freed lands. In addition to the award winning case study we created for the campaign a few years ago – https://vimeo.com/54153579 – we were very happy to contribute again to this great cause and TVC campaign. Most of us will never understand the terror and human cost that comes from living with landmines. To raise awareness, we used Apple’s iBeacon technology to create a digital minefield—making it possible for New Yorkers to experience the fear millions live with every day.
