    • Vaccines: the right tools for the job?

You know what it’s like when you don’t have the right tools for the job? We do - because to protect children right now, we have to use vaccines that aren’t well suited to the job they have to do. We need better-adapted vaccines to reach the one in five children currently unprotected by full immunisation.

This year, between two and three million children’s lives will be saved through immunisation. MSF teams vaccinate over ten million people each year alone. But around the world one in five children currently don’t get adequate protection through vaccines against killer childhood diseases and are left vulnerable. There are several reasons why we can’t reach every child with life-saving vaccines – among them is the high price of new vaccines; the cost of vaccinating a child has risen dramatically from US$1.37 to just over USD$38 over the last decade.

MSF has requested that GAVI and vaccine manufacturers extend their discounted prices to us and so far, we have been given the run-around. Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and humanitarian actors are partners in extending access to vaccination. Particularly in the world’s poorest countries, we help deliver health services, and in some areas, NGOs are the only actors able to access children with vaccines. Help MSF: send GAVI a message on Twitter asking for them to open up their lower prices to non-governmental organisations and humanitarian actors like MSF now. Visit: www.msfaccess.org/dearGAVI

The cost of vaccinating a child is now 26 times more expensive then just 10 years ago. So where does that leave the health of the millions of children vulnerable to some of the world's deadliest diseases? MSF is calling for GAVI to open up its discounted prices on life-saving vaccines so that we and other NGOs and humanitarian actors can reach more children with vaccines. Visit MSF projects around the world and see what we really do. This month, we look to the deplorable conditions of Malian refugees in Mbera camp, Mauritania. We look at the humanitarian situation in Somalia and that of sub-Saharan migrants trapped in Morocco. We also look at drug patents in India, life in Papua New Guinea and a failing health system in Chechnya.

On the other side of Nador, inside, the profile of the migrants choosing to cross the sea is different, there being many women, a lot of them pregnant, and quite a lot of children too. Camps are divided into nationalities and languages (English speakers on the one hand and French speakers on the other). Yet there is some order in this chaos, a proof that someone is in charge, someone ruling, someone making the crossing of the Strait possible. The living conditions, however, are not better than in Gurugu: plastic sheeting to barely set up a sort of tent, shortage of food, lack of water, begging. And the fear of the sea, of death. And, despite the determination to reach Europe, the dreams.
