When words become unclear, I shall focus with photographs. When images become inadequate, I shall be content with silence. -Ansel Adams- ~ In 1941 the National Park Service commissioned noted photographer Ansel Adams to create a photo mural for the Department of the Interior Building in Washington, DC. The theme was to be nature as exemplified and protected in the U.S. National Parks. The project was halted because of World War II and never resumed. The holdings of the National Archives Still Picture Branch include 226 photographs taken for this project, most of them signed and captioned by Adams. They were taken at the Grand Canyon, Grand Teton, Kings Canyon, Mesa Verde, Rocky Mountain, Yellowstone, Yosemite, Carlsbad Caverns, Glacier, and Zion National Parks; Death Valley, Saguaro, and Canyon de Chelly National Monuments. Other pictures were taken at the Boulder Dam; Acoma Pueblo, NM; San Idelfonso, NM; Taos Pueblo, NM; Tuba City, AZ; Walpi, AZ; and Owens Valley, CA. Many of the latter locations show Navajo and Pueblo Indians, their homes and activities. ~ Special thanks to TomA for L'oubli an original music score. http://www.jamendo.com/en/user/TomA%20Sound%20Factory Learn more about this musician @ http://www.toma.fm ~ Enjoy the tribute to one of the greatest photographers and nature loving man. http://sierraclub.org/monuments The Grand Canyon, California’s Big Sequoia forests, and Mount St. Helens -- all the these national treasures were permanently protected as national monuments by a sitting President, and that’s why we are able to enjoy them without fear that they will be ruined by mining, drilling or clear-cutting. President Obama has already taken a step in the right direction by making Fort Monroe in Virginia a national monument – but there’s more to do. Tell the President now is the time for him to establish his Presidential legacy by naming some of our most special wild places as national monuments, starting with Fort Ord on the California Coast at www.sierraclub.org/monuments.

As the 50th Anniversary of Canyonlands National Park approaches next month, Utahans and others across the country who love the area are pushing for President Obama to declare the 1.8 million acres of public lands surrounding the park as a new Greater Canyonlands National Monument. The video (the 4rd in a series of five short films created by young people on the importance of protecting Greater Canyonlands) features students from Colorado College on an “annual pilgrimage” to Greater Canyonlands as they grapple with the questions “How can we protect this awe-inspiring place for the future? How can we advocate for such natural beauty? How can we become stewards?”
