We are VERY EXCITED to share this project with you and the rest of the world, which is our INTENT. Check out our interview with Artist Corey Cokes as he guides you through the inspiration, creation, and [explanation] of his brainchild which is OFFBEAT. In addition, below, Corey, with elegant style, tells the story of how he, Sean and Win came to collaborate on this groundbreaking piece of artwork. This EXPERIENCE is what our collaboration will yield: OFFBEAT: THE EXPERIENCE - One Night Experience OFFBEAT: LIVE (Directed by Corey Cokes) - OFFBEAT (The Performance) - Taping of the One Night Experience (Directed by Winfield Ezell, Jr.) - Documentary Short (Directed by Winfield Ezell, Jr., Photographed by Sean Cokes) - Some Otherness - Web Series (Produced by Winfield Ezell, Jr. and Corey Cokes) - Sean Cokes Original Signature Series (Visualized by Sean Cokes) - OFFBEAT: Songs, Prose, and Instrumentals (Corey Cokes) Please continue reading to hear Corey Cokes himself chronicle our journey to the present like ONLY he can...ENJOY! It is officially undeniable! The Universal Law of Attraction was indeed [as it is] in full-effect in December 2009 when photographer Sean Cokes, writer Corey Cokes and filmmaker Winfield Ezell, Jr. converged on an artist's enclave in Atlanta Georgia’s historic West End. While Sean and his ocular acumen for effect and accentuation in print, commercial and film illuminated Atlanta's vibrant international creative stage and Win [on an epiphanic visual-quest “…to touch millions with positivity”] navigated Seattle Washington’s effervescent indie-film scene, refining the rhythmic fluidity synonymous with his name & reel style I, on lyrical expedition in New England [mining cryptic transcripts and scrolls], imbibed transcendent insight to a multifarious culture on a phantasmagoric sphere. This sphere (or dream-like state)--- a medley of shifting images, sounds, rhythms and vibrations --- is a veritable symphony. The voluminous energies within this sphere [the multifarious] evolve from the vibrations and are mellifluously unrelenting. That's how oFfbEAt: the Experience came to be. Plotting with Win at the shop one morning, I described oFfbEAt’s concept, “atmospheric re-creation thru recordings and live performance”. He got it immediately and, in turn, described a “visual conveyance” he designed to ferry art to all points. So in conjunction with recorded tracks and LIVE performances --- web chronicles, a film-short [a modus], and the staging & filming of the culminating event, a round-trip Experience. I had [discreetly] factored Sean into oFfbEAt’s infrastructure years ago. His instinct in capturing nuance and proficiency in effecting ambiance would be essential to oFfbEAt’s authenticity and I knew that back then. Now all left to do was to clue him in. He said yes and subsequently shot the “steadily” video. Can you believe those images are stills! Our journey had begun. -Corey Cokes

This new media piece was created at a one month residency at Fresh Milk Contemporary Arts Platform in Barbados. It was a collaboration with Barbadian actor and Managing Director of Mustardseed Productions Varia Williams. Within the context of a global culture of 'progress', how do we navigate the rushing stream of forward motion? Often we are caught spinning in whirlpools of our own thinking. This triptych is a meditation of sorts, revealing the frictions between progress and peace in a high demand world.

Off World is realized in situ as a 24-hour interactive public installation by Andrew Mallis as part of the 2009 Contact Toronto Photography Festival. It features photographs and video by filmmaker Mateo Guez . Mobile telephony redefines the camera as an extension of the body, charging every moment with the potential for photography. In addition to raising questions around media ownership, Off World subverts the gallery model, both physically and conceptually. The name of the gallery displaying the work, Camera, is also the german word for room. Yet, the Camera contains no photographs. It is a public-facing view finder. Video here acts less as documentary and more as a stand-in for direct experience. If they engage, the viewer leaves with the photography, and the gallery is in the viewer’s pocket. To quote Bruce Nauman: “release the gas and the container is contained.” Residing alongside personal photos in the visitor’s handset, these images are viewed with hindsight and a familiarity otherwise unattainable on a gallery wall. The gallery is thus conceived of as immaterial and the image, though multiple, is personal; both exist in the intimate yet social spaces now extended by mobile media. The exhibition ran all of May 2009 at CAMERA, an extension of the Stephen Bulger Gallery, located at 1028 Queen Street West, in Toronto, Canada.
