We held a fundraiser for our film, FLEX IS KINGS, at Bond Street Theater on April 5, 2012. Some of the best flex dancers in Brooklyn were accompanied by a live performance by Chris Lancaster and Jerome Begin (with special guest Alison Clancey), collectively known as Tranimal, our film's composers. Bomb Lager sponsored. It was a wild night. Thanks to those who came out and supported! Please visit out kickstarter page and contribute and share to your friends before the campaign ends April 12: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/deidre/flex-is-kings Thank you! -Deidre and Michael Song is "Muffin Time," by Tranimal. Once a year, people pack their pillows and meet for a non-violent fight. Most important rule: No feathers (too hard to clean up). Einmal im Jahr treffen sich New Yorker zur Kissenschlacht. Wichtigste Regel: Keine Federn (die sind eine Plage beim Saubermachen).

From New York 1's website: "The latest New Yorker of the Week helps students express themselves through art for free. NY1's Elizabeth Kaledin filed the following report. Every weekday afternoon, budding artists come from around the city to Adarsh Alphons Projects in Turtle Bay. "I think it's a very nice program for kids to show what they like to paint, what they like to draw," says student Paula Persiani. Persiani, 10, is one of 45 students creating art for free in nine different types of media like watercolors, acrylics, and charcoal. Adarsh Alphons founded the organization a year ago after he left his job as the director of the Harlem School of the Arts. "I want them to be proud of something they create this summer, and I want them also to understand that it's important to have a vision, whatever it is," says Alphons. "It doesn't have to be ambitious, but to have dreams." Alphons grew up in India, and when his family moved from the south to the north, he didn't know the new language his classmates spoke in school. Art helped him bridge the gap. "I started painting in that school quite a bit," says Alphons. "Started drawing over there because that's the only way I knew I would communicate with my peers." He used that experience to help him earn two art degrees when he moved to the U.S. Now, Alphons helps children ages 11 to 17 with their own art. They receive guided instruction and visit museums and galleries. "Adarsh shows us his slide shows to give us inspiration and then sometimes he likes to do a little sideshow of our art," says Persiani. At the end of each semester, the students have a gallery show of their own where their work is put up for sale. "I think it's special, because they are admiring your work, instead of you going there and admiring their work," says student Malikye Wright. "And you think you are a big celebrity." For giving kids a place to express themselves through art, Adarsh Alphons is our New Yorker of the Week."
