This project was an effort to display my cumulative growth of knowledge and education while here at Oberlin, I am going to produce a short film. My time at Oberlin has been filled with new learning, new thinking, and developing new skills. I entered my first Cinema Studies 101 class, taught at the time by Jeff Pence and Grace An, still not knowing what I wanted to focus my interests for the next four years. In that class, I still remember the feeling of the experience vividly, I saw my first French New Wave and Film Noir: Truffaut’s Tirez sur le pianist (Shoot the Piano Player). Though I have a much greater understanding of Cinema now I still do not know what, how, or when that movie struck me as it did. It inspired and invigorated my senses, and I felt that my future lay in film. I dedicated the rest of my time here at Oberlin to learn and create film myself, with the increasing intention of continuing to practice film creatively beyond college. It feels fated then, to make a Noir style short film. Because Film Noir was so important to my introduction to film, I wanted to make a film that reveals an understanding of the of Noir. This project shows my developed film production and theory skills. It is the story of an unlucky petty criminal who witnesses a high-profile murder and tries to escape the killers who are determined to wipe out any witnesses. it is a kind of homage to Film Noir, yes – but with story, setting, characters of my own devising and supported by awareness of what is expected (and what then is not expected) in this type of film. I wanted to embrace the classical Noir methods of lighting, shadows, camera angles, and pacing because they are unique, creative, difficult, and if done successfully will demonstrate a vast growth of knowledge in film production and equipment use.

A mad killer, a conniving seductress, and a hapless nobody meet on a cold night, straight down the dark streets of a crumbing city. This is the trailer for "Out of Nowhere", a homage to Film Noir, and my senior thesis film at Oberlin College. Starring Marina Shay, Philip Waller, and Lucas Rainey.

What a wonderful story. Bishop George P. McKinney of San Diego, California has brought together many people to help many others at St. Stevens Cathedral (Church of God in Christ). His efforts have resulted in success stories involving his church community, a K - 12th grade Christian school and a Christian retirement home. Welcome to Souljourns.
