This is a music video that I shot for my foundations time arts class at Pacific Northwest College of Art. Done in a day, shot in my apartment, at school in the pearl district of Portland, OR and the surrounding neighborhoods with my Samsung Memoir cell phone, edited in Final Cut Pro. Big thanks to my unsuspecting friends Justin and Clinton for their faces.

Norman Klein is a cultural critic, urban and media historian and novelist. Klein’s work centers on the relationship between collective memory and power, from special effects to cinema to digital theory, usually set in urban spaces; and often on the thin line between fact and fiction; about erasure, forgetting, scripted spaces and the social imaginary. Klein’s recent lecture at PNCA, presented by Contemporary Animated Arts and PNCA+FIVE Idea Studios, provided a “whistle-stop tour” of scripted spaces in Europe and the United States. Klein talks to Untitled about the conditions of capitalism and consumer culture that have prompted the interplay of power and illusion in contemporary America in spaces such as malls, video games, and most recently, on Wall Street, as well as the creative potential for artists and architects to co-opt these scripted spaces. Alumni and faculty emeritus George Johanson ’50 reflects on Seven Decades of Painting, in conjunction with his retrospective in PNCA's Swigert Commons. An accomplished and prolific painter and printmaker, George Johanson’s influence stretches over a geographical and generational landscape that reflects his seven decades of making and teaching. After graduating from Pacific Northwest College of Art, then known as the Museum Art School, in the late 1940s Johanson then taught at the College for the next 25 years. Having studied at PNCA with Portland’s luminary modernists Louis Bunce, William Givler, Jack McLarty and Michele Russo, Johanson’s work is renown for its climatic narrative that surges with intense color and exuberant figuration. “Johanson has been the consummate Northwest craftsman influenced by Abstract Expressionism,” said an Oregonian article. “He’s painted with equal intelligence and poetry the human figure and landscape. And he’s also woven complex narratives that alternate between realism and a gestural abstraction” Johanson interviewed by Katherine Bovee. Cinematography and Editing by Brennan Broome ’11. Illustration and Drawing Faculty member Kurt Hollomon is back in the classroom after a summer that included teaching in the International Urban Sketchers Symposium held in Portland and hosted by PNCA’s Continuing Education. For three days the College’s Pearl District neighborhood became a canvas as participants from around the world did what they do best—observe and sketch the wonder of the day to day. Hollomon is a regular contributor to the Urban Sketchers blog, which features over 100 invited artists from around the world who share a passion for drawing on location. After the Symposium, Untitled took time to sit down with Hollomon to talk about his work as a teacher, artist and designer and to also take a peek in some of his many, many sketchbooks. Hollomon, who as a teacher says he is often inspired to go in new directions by his students, teaches by example and is never seen without a sketchbook in hand.
