"Saying nothing, says alot." - Dr. David Schonfeld, Center for School Crisis & Bereavement. Chris Cavalieri, Executive Director, of Family Lives On Foundation talks about stimulating the 5 senses and helping children and families communicate about the loss of a parent. Transcript: We use Skype because we’ve just begun our national outreach. When one parent dies, the other parent has double the parental responsibilities, double the financial, double the household, and they’re navigating their own grief. So, we know that they are overwhelmed. What we found when we switched to Skype is that kids love to talk to a screen. The kids are talking about Mom’s life, not her death. And then we are going to asking for great detail. “The first Phillies game every year, what section did you sit in? And, think back to that time, when you were there, what were the snacks that you had?” We are trying to stimulate the five senses because that strengthens the emotional connection with the (deceased) parent. The first thing out of the (surviving) parent’s mouth is “Oh, my gosh, I had no idea they remembered that, they did that, felt that, thought that.” When you have traditions or rituals, it’s a little bit safer for kids because they expect what’s going to happen. If they are going to do this activity, whether it’s going to a Phillies game or making cookies, it’s delivered to the house, we don’t do it with them. We are trying to promote intra-family connection and communication, so we want the family to celebrate it. After the tradition is delivered, we tell the families, we are going to check in with you. It’s really not about Phillies tickets or cookie dough, it’s just knowing that we talk about Mom. Your relationship never ends. Family Lives On supports the lifelong emotional wellbeing for children whose mother or father has died. Our Tradition Program provides opportunities for intentional remembering, creating a safe haven for grief, communication and celebration. www.familyliveson.org
