'Passenger' is a dance project created by Shana Simmons Dance. In this performance the group pays homage to the extinct creature, the Passenger pigeon. From the moment these birds were born to their tragic extinction in the early 20th century, this modern dance group makes the Passenger pigeon come alive in this beautiful dance number. They encourage the audience to think about extinction and how it relates to the human race. How can we preserve Earth for us and future generations to come?

On 1 September 1914 Martha, the last passenger pigeon, died in Cincinnati Zoo. Once the world's most abundant bird it fell victim to excessive hunting and deforestation within a few decades. Marc Schlossman photographed passenger pigeons and other now extinct birds in the vaults of various museums in the UK and US and spoke to curators about the processes of extinction. Made in collaboration with the Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago. Edited by Panos Pictures. On September 1, 1914, the last known passenger pigeon in existence died in the Cincinnati Zoo. Martha, named after Martha Washington, was the last of her kind, an amazingly abundant species that went from billions that darkened the entire sky-to none-in a matter of decades. What happened to the passenger pigeon? You could say we happened. The one-hour documentary From Billions to None: The Passenger Pigeon's Flight to Extinction follows naturalist and author Joel Greenberg on a quest to reveal the incredible, mostly forgotten story of how the most abundant bird species in North America became extinct by human hands in a geologic heartbeat.
