Keynote Speech by Patience Lehrman, M.Ed., M.B.A. at the 2014 Immigrant Integration Summit, hosted by the Building Integrated Communities program of the Latino Migration Project (http://migration.unc.edu/programs/bic/). In this speech, Lehrman shares her personal story of moving to the United States from Cameroon, West Africa; securing her first job as a teacher in Washington State; and later running for Philadelphia School Board. Lehrman speaks of a larger vision for immigrant integration work, including the importance of nurturing existing, organic, and less formal community interactions (what Lehrman refers to as “small i” work) as much as larger policy and legislative efforts (“big I” work). Lehrman currently serves as Special Assistant to the Dean for Strategic Partnerships and Community Affairs at the College of Education at Temple University. She has also served as the National Director of Project SHINE, an immigrant integration initiative headquartered at Temple University with partners in 16 communities across the country. Lehrman is a 2012 recipient of the Presidential Citizens Medal, the second highest civilian award in the United States. The Latino Migration Project is a collaborative program of the Institute for the Study of the Americas and the Center for Global Initiatives at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
