    • Pilgrim Home: In Search of Scrooby Manor

      from Jane Williams / Added

In the 17th century, during a period of economic turmoil and religious persecution, the seeds of British American history were sown in a rural pocket of England. This is the story of Scrooby Manor, a house that lies at the centre of events that had a profound impact on the birth of the United States of America. In 1620 the Mayflower ship finally sets sail for the 'New World' from Plymouth, England. Years before a group met in secret at Scrooby to plan their new life. Today up to 30 million living people are descendants of those passengers, now referred to as Pilgrims. Nearly 400 years later some of them make a return pilgrimage. They too are in search of Scrooby Manor. Parts of the original Manor still stand, but what exactly are the buildings that remain? Once a magnificent Archbishops' Palace it was even briefly owned by King Henry VIII. Could it also be where a Scrooby congregation worshipped and desperately sought sanctuary before escaping to Holland? The current owner, Julie Dunstan, seeks out local historian, Sue Allan, to help her investigate. A close friendship develops as they go in search of Scrooby Manor. What they find, once revealed, writes a new history.
