Morgan Noireaux wins the AWT Quatro Desert Showdown Check out what might be some of the most epic footage ever shot from a jet ski of a windsurfer. Bennett Williams takes you on board and shows some of the speed power and turns that the riders had. Punta San Carlos, Baja delivers once again. Day one saw the women and the pros take to the water as the forecast called for the best conditions of the week. After an introduction to all the crew and competitors at the camp it was time to head to the point where the first heat of the day got under way. With two open spots available in the pro fleet the decision was made to run a trial heat to determine which of the amateurs would have their chance to cut their teeth among the top ranked sailors on the AWT. Ingrid Larouche and Joey Sanchez finished first and second advancing into the pro bracket. Pro Division: The pro heats were stacked with many top pros making the long trip down to enjoy the incredible Punta San Carlos conditions. The first heat saw Bernd Roediger edging out Ferdinando Loffreda and Larouche. Next up Casey Hauser put together a strong performance taking down Kevin Pritchard and Bryan Metcalf Perez. Heat 3 saw Morgan Noireaux lay down the two biggest wave scores of the pros so far to advance over Russ Faurot and Josh Steele. The final heat saw Levi Siver move past Kevin McGillivray and Joey Sanchez. Pressure was on with the top two riders advancing to go head-to-head in the final. Roediger and Siver sailed well but couldn’t match the performances put in by Pritchard and Noireaux. The final matchup was set! The final was extended to 25-minutes and the conditions were firing. Both riders put on strong performances with aggressive powerful turns and huge aerials, but in the end Noireaux found the best set waves giving him his first AWT tour win.

This is the result of a summer of wave-chasing. My summer of 2013, to be exact. At that time, I was in the height of my competition hiatus, I didn't have anything to do but travel around Hawaii and the west coast of North America with Kevin Pritchard finding fun waves and filming them. Most of that footage went to make our Tourists of the Sea series, but looking over the leftovers and throwaway clips unseen by the world, I realized that these were my favorite moments. These clips best express what I set out searching for that summer. Like all footage, these clips are now obsolete. They capture a past me in a past style. My riding has improved since, or to put it more accurately: changed. That summer I was drawn to speed and being one with the wave. My board, fins, and sail were tuned to do fast turns and tricks in the critical sections of the wave, being a part of the wave rather than on it. This short edit captures the fear of hitting a big lip, and also the fun of riding small waves alone through a garden of rocks. Or, the frustration of riding super-technical mast-breaking beach breaks. The goiter at 3:07 is possibly the most technically difficult goiter I've ever done: heavy beach break with strong gusty off-shore winds. Watching THESE ARE WAVES over again, I remember back over a decade ago to sailing with Alex Mussolini and Sebastian Steudtner. We'd all pile onto one big Hookipa wave and go for airs and 360s over each other. It was so much fun-- energy ping-ponging back and forth. And not only fun; those sessions made me a better windsurfer. And in editing the clip, I couldn't help but think of Thomas Traversa, Brendan Pyatt and David Ezzy, as they are the three people who care about windsurfing wave riding more than anyone else I know. A little bit of me is always wondering what they think of every off-the-lip. Now that I'm back on the PWA world tour, my focus has shifted and so has my style of riding, but I'm still just chasing waves and trying to hit heavy lips as fast and as hard as I can. (PS, the music, which is wonderfully fun, doesn't start till 35 seconds in, so don't turn up the volume too high searching for sound and blow out your ears.) Enjoy! Special thanks to: Brian Caserio, Kevin Pritchard, and Kevin Trejo (Solo Sports).

One of the best ways to catch some south swell is to jump in a private plane from San Diego and fly down 2.5 hours to Punta San Carlos. It's the most efficient way to get some waves quickly and be back home before anyone knew that you were gone. All you need is a small bag of clothes, harness and wetsuit. Each year Matt Pritchard kicks off the windsurfing season with a clinic in Punta San Carlos to brush off the cobwebs and tune up the skills. Those who join these clinics, hosted by SoloSports, know that this is the best way for them to get the most out of the upcoming season. 2014 was no different with the group being spoilt to some splendid conditions where they could ease their way into the waves early on in the week and, as if on cue, some bigger waves came to play once they had their skills honed and their confidence up. Everyone left exhausted from all the SUPing, mountain biking and sailing, though most importantly they all left with smiles on their faces, ready for whatever conditions they were heading home to. If you would like to see yourself on one of these clinics then head on over to www.solosports.net or www.pritchardwindsurfing.com for more information and dates.
