This was the first time I ever directed/shot anything on 16mm film, sophomore year for Production 1 class at Columbia College Chicago. We shot the whole thing in under 2 hours with 100 ft. (about 2 minutes and 45 seconds!) of 16mm black and white reversal film (I think it was 200 speed TRI-X), with a Bolex H16 Reflex spring-wound camera and 10mm, 25mm and 50mm c-mount lenses. I had the raw footage transferred to MiniDV, did the reverse telecine in Cinema Tools and matched my handmade razor blade edits in Final Cut. This is still one of my favorite experiences/shoots from college, I'm still proud of it after all these years and it makes me wish that every project could still be shot on film today!

"Small Gauge Blow-up" is a film about Cineric Lab in New York City, and their work doing optical blow-ups of small gauge films. I co-directed this with Simon Lund who wrote it, and I shot it all on Super-8 reversal film, with my Nizo for the timelapse and a Beaulieu for the sync. Because the film was rated so low for daylight (50 ASA if I remember correctly) we had to simply blast the HMI's to get exposure, which gives it that 1950's info doc feel. The rhythm in the soundtrack is made from recordings of the Oxberry Optical printer itself.

Overload (2010, Super 8, 4min) Naivistic science fiction movie. Abstract, static shots. A story about a victim of the government's secret mind control program. Overload was shot on reversal film stock that had expired over 20 years ago, hence the bluish cast. Some individual frames were printed on paper, messed up with watercolors and rephotographed. Screenings: Timishort Film Festival (Romania 2011), Movement On Sceen 11 (UK 2011), Patricia Doran Gallery (USA 2010), Euroshorts; Best Experimental Film (Poland 2010), Artgrease TV Program (USA 2010), In/Out Festival (Poland 2010), Super8 Film Festival (Italy 2010), Flicker Spokane Film Festival (USA 2010). www.maurilehtonen.com
