This is a short film we produced for MT Audubon about the impact oil & gas development has on sage grouse, a species recently warranted for listing under the Endangered Species Act. This film features selections from an interview we did with David Allen Sibley last year. Enjoy. New content posted regularly on our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/ConservationMedia

The iconic Sage Grouse is one of the symbols of the High Plains. Most people go to Wyoming to see them, but they are also in Utah, and other places. These birds were filmed at a public lek not an hour away from Salt Lake City. It is accessible by automobile, no 4 wheel drive required. Like at all grouse leks. you need to get there before dawn, be quiet, and don't walk around. Because these birds were filmed from 50-80 meters away, the sounds are not as rich as from a closer recording. Mostly the low-pitched plopping and gulping comes through, with the whistles and rubs hard to hear. But the choosy female still rules, as these males try to attract her, even into June. They started this in March. There were about 20 birds on this lek.

              from HagarFILMS / Added

What did we learn from the spotted owl where billions of dollars were wasted, hundreds of thousands of jobs lost, entire towns boarded up, just because environmentalists used bad science to incorrectly influence a prejudiced federal judge. Now, a court ordered National Fish and Wildlife determination about the greater sage grouse could seriously curtail recreation, agriculture and renewable energy development across the west. Haven't we already learned this lesson? HagarFILMS produced this campaign of 3 x :30 second ads on the topic for the Western Energy Alliance, a follow up to our 2013 Common Ground campaign about protecting water, air, land and wildlife with responsible energy production.

                  from Conservation Media / Added

This is an unused sequence from a larger film we did about the conservation of sagebrush habitat and its sage-dependent species. Disturbances such as oil and gas development and residential development have been displacing sage-dependent species at rates simply incompatible with their long-term persistence. Umbrella species like sage grouse have been so extensively pressured in the last century that they occupy only about 50% of their original range and are at about 50% density within that occupied range. If we can conserve sage haitats enough to support healthy grouse populations, we can protect virtually everything else dependent on this unique ecosystem.
