On may 29th 1953 Edmund Hillary from New Zealand and Tensing Norgay were the first to reach the top of Mount Everest – earths highest point at 8848 meters. But in 1924 Andrew Irvine and George Mallory already started the first daring and serious attempt to stand on the roof of the world. Eye witnesses report that the two explorers have been sighted 300 meters below the peak on the day of conquering the summit before they disappeared in the fog covering the top of Mount Everest. The documentary by Gerald Salmina, produced in cooperation by pretv, taglicht media, ORF and MC4 Productions, follows the path of the two pioneers eager to discover the secret of the first conquering of Mount Everest. The documentary aired first on December 30, 2010 on ORF2 (Austria) and will again be show in spring 2011 by arte and WDR (Germany). brave rabbit created 15 animations, visualizing the different routes, sighting locations and forensic discoveries above 7000 meters. The city of Atlanta shut down after a layer of ice formed on top of 6" of snow. Here's a view of my drive to the office on day 4 of the great Snowpocalypse 2011.

Videoed with ContourHD 1080p as an afterthought on a bike ride (as you can see in the end), sorry about poor zooming &c. The Hernesaari snow dump can handle 5 trucks per minute at peak (something like 15m³ per load). Right now it's not quite as hectic since there's not been a big snowfall but as you can see, it's still a load every half a minute or so. The idea is simple enough: dump (mostly clean) snow into the sea; the digger tries to push it a bit further from the pier and one of the two tugs twirls around to mix the snow with the water to keep the hole open (the sea is frozen). And, yes, that's the noonday sun and it's already several weeks since the solstice…sigh.

I walked out of the office after getting off work at 2 a.m. and saw this light, fluffy snow falling. So I decided to pull out my Canon EOS 7D and 70-200 and grab a few test clips shot at ISO 5000. The noise is clearly visible, but not a deal breaker for web use, in my opinion.
