Taking a break from the daily grind couldn't have been better than with a solid day of Soap Box Derby racing with the 2011 Healthpoint Hope Box Derby in Northern Kentucky. Our car averaged 29.1 MPH over the 9 runs of the day. A special thanks to the whole OMS crew that showed up to support our Racer Lisa "Gran ToRino" Iannarino and the great pit crew Paul Lanternman. Paul also ran a camera gathering some footage along with strategically placing the GoPro in a few great positions to grab a cool hard to reach shot. Thanks to Monty and Aaron for operating a few 5Ds and Matt for playing the role of press photographer to grab some great stills.

The 2011 HealthPoint Hopebox Derby was quite a success! It appears the goal of raising $50,000 to help support the Pike Street Clinic for the Homeless in Covington will be met, with an increase of over 40% from the total last year. This year almost 30 teams participated in the action. Congratulations to PNC Bank, the 2011 Champion. We had an absolutely great time building and testing our car and learned a great deal about the physics of a soapbox derby car. With a consistent top speed of 29.1 MPH over 9 runs we were forced out by the champs by .1 seconds.

Quoted from the Union.com: On Telestream's rear tire in both of the final two heats, as well as running up front in all afternoon heats, was Mountain Recreation owner Jason Auld. Converting a discarded sky-box ski carrier into a soapbox car offered Auld and teammates an immediate aerodynamic design, with the only resistance of wind being Auld's helmeted head peeking through a single hole in the green shell. Auld said the simple and straightforward approach meant not many changes were needed through the day. But he was impressed in the result of two changes — one in weight and another tires — that helped turn things around after a less-than impressive test run last week. “We kind of came out of nowhere,” said Auld, now an apparent full-fledged fan of the soapbox derby. “This is the best thing that's happened around here in a long time,” he said. “It's killer. For the first year, I was just impressed how cool a lot of the stuff turned out. People put a lot of thought into it.”
