Jeff and Juli Gilles are demonstrating a wide array of permaculture homesteading techniques on their 5 acre parcel near Rocky Mountain House, AB. In just a couple years they have managed to transform thousands of square feet of land into productive gardens ranging from food forests to up-cycled raised beds, and have used their technological know-how and a "get-er-done" approach to test everything from solar electric, heating, and cooking to rainwater harvesting, energy efficient retrofits, food storage, and large scale soil production through their business Taimi Soil Solutions. Their acreage is quickly becoming a leading edge example of homesteading solutions and off grid technologies relevant to cold climates, and they will be showcasing it all as the hosts of the 2013 Western Canada Permaculture Convergence this August.

A look at the work underway at the Joint Center for Artificial Photosynthesis, where scientists are attempting to create "artificial leaves" that can convert sunlight, carbon dioxide and water into a liquid fuel. If they're successful, it could enable mass production of "drop in" fuels that could power cars, ships, trains and planes without pumping out more of the greenhouse gases responsible for global warming. The video features an interview with Heinz Frei, acting director of JCAP's northern campus in Berkeley. For more, please visit: SFGate.com/TakingTheHeat

Leila Madrone presents "Robots from Water, Music from Light" as part of "BAASICS.2: The Future." Leila Madrone is an inventor and artist who explores the intersection of robotics and art. She currently works and plays at Otherlab creating origami inspired robotics for renewable energy. She cofounded Ensemble Robot, a group dedicating to designing and building interactive musical robots, and she was a lead on NASA’s GigaPan project creating large-scale interactive panoramas and the robotics for creating them. www.lbot.org BAASICS (Bay Area Art & Science Interdisciplinary Collaborative Sessions) is a series of San Francisco-based evening programs that bring together local visual artists, musicians, choreographers, scientists, and interdisciplinary thinkers to present engaging, multi-media lectures and performances that explore a given theme. In the United States, the contemporary fine arts and sciences are generally set apart from popular discourse, and despite much talk of commonality between artists and scientists, there is little substantive dialogue between the disciplines. By bringing together working artists, scientists, and other creative individuals to present diverse ideas and projects organized around one theme, we aim to foment not only interdisciplinary exchange but a new genre of experimentation that will move beyond what one of these disciplines can achieve on its own. More importantly, because these lectures and performances are free and open to the public, we hope to make the fine arts and sciences less esoteric for a general audience, thereby inspiring guests to think about how art and science relate to one another and to society at large. BAASICS was conceived and is produced by Selene Foster & Christopher Reiger, with support from Southern Exposure’s Alternative Exposure Grant Program. BAASICS is proud to have presented its first two events in conjunction with ODC Theater and Root Division.
