Please donate $10 or more by April 30, 2014: http://www.gofundme.com/44xj1w. Perks include tickets to my upcoming performance and songs performed personally by me for you. My name is Rachael Derello. I am a queer Black mother and cultural organizer. I am also a survivor of sexual assault. I have spent much of my time in this world, living outside of my body, detached from it. In Fall 2013, I began participating in the Generative Somatics: Somatics and Trauma program. The vast knowledge that this training provides, along with the brilliant instructors and the hands-on somatic bodywork helped me re-surface and address old wounds and memories that I thought were long gone. It has also helped me to love myself more deeply than I thought was possible. The cost of the course is $4,000, which is way more than I can afford. Please support me in continuing my healing journey by helping me raise $3,000, which covers tuition and transportation costs from Durham, North Carolina to New York City, where the trainings occur every other month through Spring 2014. Footage taken during a ‘material culture and eco tourism survey’ in the East Sepik region of Papua New Guinea. August 2013. Along the way we caught up with several of the PNG artists involved in the 7th Asia Pacific Triennial held at QAGOMA in 2012/13. It was great to visit the artists in their villages and also attend events such as the opening of a new Kwoma spirit house in Tongwinjamb, and a yam festival in Brikiti village. Big thank you to Martin Fowler, Justin Francis and Ruth McDougall for organising the trip, and the Papua New Guinea Tourism Promotion Authority for helping with flights and accommodation.

I shot images that Candy wanted and then what I thought might look good. It was totally low budget video where I was basically the only production member, using all hand held and then putting the pieces together in post.

Spend a bit of time with Pat Wamboldt and the gibbons living at the Khao Tapet Nature & Wildlife Centre outside Surat Thani, Thailand. Note: At the end of this video, I recommended warthai.org and gibbonproject.org as resources for gibbon rehabilitation. Since posting the video, I've come across a Facebook group, curated by a Claire 'Gibbon' oddly enough, which at some point brought the following to light: 'The story of the gibbons you see in the street is so terrible that the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project and their owner, the Wild Animal Rescue Foundation of Thailand, will use it to their advantage. They will make you feel sorry for the gibbons and they will convince you to donate money to the project to help. The project will also attract a lot of volunteers who think they are coming to help the gibbons but the GRP is not the one receiving the money, this would be WARF. Throughout 2007-2009, the GRP in Phuket, Thailand, was investigated. Many volunteers were sent to the project to record conversations, take pictures and find out what was hidden to the public. In this project some staff are dedicated to the gibbons and do a good job but many staff have other ideas and use the GRP as a cover to behave in a very inappropriate manner toward volunteers. The GRP owner (WARF) also see this project as something very different than a gibbon rescue centre, we became a first hand witness to the abuse, fraud and corruption (to name a few illegal things occurring there). Due to the location of this project, the amount of corruption of the country, and powerful personalities involved in all of this, these informations needed to get to the public to make things change. This website has been created to bring pressure on WARF & the GRP in Phuket, Thailand to stop their activities and to get a better organization to take over. Gibbons are native of Thailand and should not be used for money in their own country, they need our help!' Gibbon provides an alternative website, gibbonproject.com, but it doesn't seem to have been updated in a year. Her email contact is claire.gibbon@hotmail.com. I haven't been able to find any official report of corruption within the GRP, but having lived in Thailand for more than a year, I'll say it's not totally unlikely. Something worth investigating, perhaps. I feel the piece functions well on its own, recommended links notwithstanding.
