On Tuesday, March 18th, Families for Safer Streets visited Albany to gain support for a bill that would allow NYC to set its own speed limits as low as 20 mph. At a press conference at the end of the day, Assemblyman Joseph R. Lentol gave a very honest, sobering speech that could be equated to a driver's confessional: that drivers speed, that they think that it is okay, and that most do it - including himself - and we can no longer allow this to continue. Frankly, it is nice to see an elected official so honest. It's more of the kind of talk we need from more drivers, and for those who do not think they are doing any harm, listen to Assemblyman Lentol.

On Saturday and Sunday, March 15th & 16th, Right of Way organized events helping 10 communities that have applied for Neighborhood Slow Zones, but have yet to receive any traffic calming infrastructure from the city, install their own “20 is Plenty” signs. Streetfilms visited a well-attended event of 35 activists and volunteers in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. There's a big push citiwide in NYC from many sides including traffic safety neighborhood groups, advocacy groups and NYC councilmembers to get Albany's state government to pass a "home rule" law allowing NYC to set the city wide speed limit at 20 mph. Also for reference, there is a very successful group in the UK that has accomplished much thru their 20 is Plenty campaign That Streetfilm can be watched here on vimeo: http://vimeo.com/14549963 In the UK over 3 million people live in 20 mph zones.

It's time to get psyched about biking again! This has been the worst winter of my adult life. And if you live most places in the United States you'd probably agree. Between the extreme below-average temperatures and the constant barrage of snowstorms, it's made cycling outdoors a rough proposition - even for the intrepid. To attempt to lift my spirits, I started browsing archived Streetfilms bike b-roll from all over the world, and I could feel my mood instantly change. We've certainly been lucky to shoot in great bicycle places in beautiful weather and that magic of bike love easily translates via the camera. So I thought maybe I should share some of that joy and get some of you to look forward to the Spring with this hasty assembled montage. Warmer days are coming my friends. Enjoy the bike porn.

If there was ever a testament to the strength of the Vision Zero movement, it showed yesterday when at least 150 people showed up in wind chills nearing zero to a vigil paying honor to the life of Ella Bandes, who lost her life nearly one year ago at the intersection of Wyckoff & Myrtle Streets. And not just Ella, mounters unveiled a banner listing the hundreds of victims of Traffic Violence in 2013, and those thus far in 2014. Speakers called on Mayor Bill de Blaiso to implement Vision Zero and fix dangerous intersections as soon as possible.

Janette Sadik-Khan's first wide public appearance amongst cyclists at Transportation Alternative's Tour de Brooklyn on June 4th, 2007. She rode the entire Tour and it is very interesting to reflect back on her words. At that point in NYC Transportation History we had bike lanes, but nothing along the lines of the protected lanes and innovative streets transformations seen under her watch. It is short, but I think it is fair to say she succeeded, and in many ways way beyond some of our individual hopes!
