    A faulty water heater is believed to have caused a fire July 3, 2010, that destroyed a double-wide mobile home, the residence of Teddy Wilson, and a travel trailer off of Highway 89 near VN Lane. The fire which began about 12:30 p.m. and shown here in raw video did an estimated $57,000 in damage to the structures and contents. Firefighters from Cal Fire, the U.S. Forest Service, and volunteers from Cassel, Old Station, Hat Creek responded. The fire took about 40 minutes to contain. One firefighter sustained heat exhaustion. Traffic along Highway 89 was stopped and allowed to proceed one lane at a time as fire equipment was blocking the southbound lane to fight the fire.

                Jamie Pineda grew up in Fall River Mills with seven brothers and sisters. She played guitar and piano in the church choir while also singing in the school choir. In 2007 she joined Sweetbox, a Los Angeles based pop music project formed in 1995 by executive producer Heiko Schmidt and music producer Roberto "Geo" Rosan. Throughout the years Sweetbox has had several leading women including Kimberly Kearney, Dacia Bridges, Tina Harris, Jade Villalon and most recently and currently Jamie Pineda, who won the front singer position after 3,000 auditions were held. Jamie's second Sweetbox album is slated to be released in September. "We Can Work It Out," sung here at the Burney Basin Days queen pageant July 1, 2010, was released to Japan in April 2009. The single had great success in both Korea and Japan, hitting #4 on iTunes Pop Charts in Japan and the country's Billboard Hot 100 at #27.

                  A retired Burney real estate broker and World War II pilot was selected as the grand marshal for the July 3, 2010, Burney Basin Days parade. Robert O. “Bob” Cook was scheduled to ride at the front of the parade, followed by honored guests - military veterans who have served in the U.S. armed forces. Cook, however, became ill last week and died June 28. He was featured in an Aug. 1, 2007, News story and was a pilot during WWII. The video above shows him reuniting 62 years later with paratrooper squadron leader Martin G. Henzel at the Burney VFW Hall where they reminisced about Cook piloting Henzel and nine other Polish paratroopers behind enemy lines during Operation Market Garden, one of the most disastrous battles of World War II and a battle recreated in the 1977 Richard Attenborough movie, “A Bridge Too Far.”
