A film by Nick Francis (www.speak-it.org) & Marc Silver (www.marcsilver.net) An intimate portrait of Omar, a 17 year old stranded in a refugee camp since the 2011 war in Libya. The film offers a unique perspective of one person amongst thousands waiting for a chance to start their life again in a safe country. When war broke out earlier this year in Libya, thousands of refugees from countries such as Somalia, Sudan, and Eritrea, who were living in or transiting through the country at the time, were forced to flee for their lives yet again. They are now waiting in refugee camps along the Tunisian and Egyptian borders - unable to return home due to war or persecution, unable to return to Libya due to ongoing violence and discrimination, and unable to stay in Tunisia or Egypt, countries both undergoing their own political upheavals. Part 2 of Omar's story is here ... https://vimeo.com/47612730 ... Rain is Beautiful

It's the fifth anniversary of the Iraq War and with talk of it not being even half-way through, we are approaching the 4000th American combat death. More importantly, a recent World Health Organization report based on Iraqi Health Ministry figures estimated that 151,000 Iraqi civilians were killed between March 2003, the start of the invasion, and June 2006. Many of the reports of civilian deaths are disputed. What cannot be argued, however, is another grave consequence of the Iraq War: the displacement crisis as a mass exodus of Iraqis flee the instabilities and ever-increasing sectarian violence at home, tearing their families apart. In mid-January 2008, with the support of the United Nations High Commission For Refugees (UNHCR), I traveled to Amman, Jordan to photograph and record a few of these families trapped in a no-man’s land; asylum seekers looking for refuge, too afraid to return to their blood-soaked country. Here are a few of their stories.

In response to a call from UNHCR to "do 1 thing" to support refugees, Ericsson is leading an industry initiative to use technology as a force for good in support of the refugee cause.

UPDATE!!!!! Thanks to many who devoted time and energies to stopping the Cessation Clause, as of Jun 30, 2013, only 3 of the 12 countries who were to institute the clause have decided to do so- Malawi, The Republic of the Congo and Zimbabwe. WE STILL URGE PEOPLE TO PRESSURE THESE GOVERNMENTS and we hope "Stateless" was of some help in this cause. In June of 2013, the UNHCR along with many countries in Africa have decided that the 18 years refuge they have offered the Rwandan refugees since the Genocide is going to stop and the refugees must go home. The refugees have well founded fears that they will be persecuted, jailed or even killed by the regime now running the country. Their fears a well founded- watch the film to know why! Syrian children from the school of the Parroisse del Kaa Based on an original idea by Ferran Quevedo for humanamedia.org Copyright © 2014 Ferran Quevedo & humanamedia.org. All rights reserved I´m from Syria أنا من سوريا Syrian-Lebanese border - arabic Innocence lost The dangers for children go beyond death and injury. Boys as young as 12 have been recruited to support the fighting, some in actual combat, others to work as informers, guards, or arms smugglers. Two-thirds of Syrians surveyed in the most insecure governorates believe that child recruitment has accelerated. Families have also described how children are seized by armed forces from homes, schools, hospitals and checkpoints. According to a recent UN report, children as young as 11 are being detained with adults. In some cases, they are being subjected to torture and sexual abuse to humiliate them, force confessions, or pressure relatives to surrender. The No Lost Generation strategy proposes practical ways to address the harsh reality that a generation of Syrian children is being shaped by violence, displacement, and a persistent lack of opportunity and could be lost forever, with profound long-term consequences for Syria, the region, and beyond. source: UNICEF
