In this piece I seek to bring into the foreground the importance - and the resulting power - of a large ensemble decided on playing together. The piece begins with each musician entering one by one, playing the exact same pitch, gradually becoming one sound. As the piece progresses, the players are slowly given more freedom and begin to make individual choices, all the while maintaining togetherness. The goal is to transfer energy created with a sonic unison into a physical unison; in other words, an outward togetherness turns into an inward togetherness. Ruth Cousins is a 20 year old student studying Journalism at The Media School, Bournemouth University. As part of her degree she is required to undertake a number of real-life work placements. In September 2012 she secured a 2 week role with the not-for-profit Q&D Productions Limited. Her task was to undertake research to discover a story that would come under the banner of A Thousand Voices for a Broken System; a video project designed to highlight public concerns to local authorities (which is currently piloting in the borough of Lambeth, London). Other than general producorial support from Paul Atherton and advice from experienced journalists at GRN (www.grnlive.com), this was entirely Ruth's own work. She learnt that Lambeth had just set up the first co-operative council and that there seemed many issues directly impacting on children services in the borough. With just ten days, Ruth managed to secure interview with the Leader of the Council, Head of Children's Services at Lambeth Council, Chilld & Young Person's Convenor at Lambeth Unison. a concerned parent & campaigner and a service provider. She also acquired a statement from a spokesperson from the Department of Education. WIth just a cameraman, a microphone and a laptop she recorded and edited this short documentary film. It clearly highlights the dissonance between the values of the Co-operative Council and the experiences of those that will actually use it (an oft encountered problem in all politics). It's a great piece of work and Q&D Productions wish Ruth well in her endeavors.
