After deciding to go vegan this year, I began volunteering for Scotland for Animals. A charity focused on raising awareness for all the issues and injustices faced by animals throughout Scotland. I made this short video to help them promote awareness of cruelty that goes on in abattoirs, and most hopefully, to encourage people to take action. *Please note, there are no pictures from inside abattoirs used in this film. Only sounds. I've tried to avoid graphic imagery in the hope that it encourages the wider public, not discourages. Ultimately, I hope this vid helps animals... even if it helps seed a thought in peoples' minds, to become more compassionate. Thank you for watching and sharing. http://scotlandforanimals.org/ http://scotlandforanimals.org/cctv.php http://veganeasy.org/vegan-easy-challenge Quotes from advocates of animals rights including Joaquin Phoenix, Carl Sagan, Albert Einstein, Franz Kafka, Milan Kundera, George Bernard Shaw, Leo Tolstoy, Gandhi and Leonardo Da Vinci. " “We are all animals of this planet. We are all creatures. And nonhuman animals experience pain sensations just like we do. They too are strong, intelligent, industrious, mobile, and evolutional. They too are capable of growth and adaptation. Like us, firsthand foremost, they are earthlings. And like us, they are surviving. Like us they also seek their own comfort rather than discomfort. And like us they express degrees of emotion. In short like us, they are alive." —Joaquin Phoenix "Humans -- who enslave, castrate, experiment on, and fillet other animals - have had an understandable penchant for pretending animals do not feel pain. A sharp distinction between humans and "animals" is essential if we are to bend them to our will, wear them, eat them - without any disquieting tinges of guilt or regret. It is unseemly of us, who often behave so unfeelingly toward other animals, to contend that only humans can suffer. The behavior of other animals renders such pretensions specious. They are just too much like us." —Carl Sagan "If a man aspires towards a righteous life, his first act of abstinence is from injury to animals." — Albert Einstein "Our task must be to free ourselves... by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature and its beauty." —Albert Einstein "It is my view that the vegetarian manner of living, by its purely physical effect on the human temperament, would most beneficially influence the lot of mankind." —Albert Einstein "Now I can look at you in peace; I don’t eat you anymore." — Kafka "Humanity’s true moral test, its fundamental test…consists of its attitude towards those who are at its mercy: animals. And in this respect humankind has suffered a fundamental debacle, a debacle so fundamental that all others stem from it." —Milan Kundera, The Unbearable Lightness of Being, 1984 "When a man wants to murder a tiger, he calls it sport; when a tiger wants to murder him, he calls it ferocity." — George Bernard Shaw, writer and Nobel laureate (1856–1950) "A man can live and be healthy without killing animals for food; therefore, if he eats meat, he participates in taking animal life merely for the sake of his appetite. And to act so is immoral." —Leo Tolstoy, Russian novelist (1828–1910) "It ill becomes us to invoke in our daily prayers the blessings of God, the Compassionate, if we in turn will not practice elementary compassion towards our fellow creatures." —Mahatma Gandhi (1869–1948) "Truly man is the king of beasts, for his brutality exceeds them. We live by the death of others. We are burial places." —Leonardo Da Vinci (1452–1519)

STOP VIVISECTION is a European Citizens' Initiative (ECI) that has collected more than 1.150.000 certified signatures asking people to support a paradigm shift in the waybiomedical and toxicological research are being conducted. This is the text of our request which advocates the replacement of animal testing with more accurate, reliable, human-relevant methods: We urge the European Commission to abrogate directive 2010/63/EU on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes and to present a new proposal that does away with animal experimentation and instead makes compulsory the use - in biomedical and toxicological research - of data directly relevant for the human species. Being an ECI (and not a simple petition), STOP VIVISECTION enters the political arena with an entirely new tool for participatory democracy. In fact, the european citizens have acquired, in 2011, the possibility to propose legislation on matters where the EU has competence to legislate. Seizing this opportunity, a group of scientists and lay citizens from everywhere in Europe have submitted an invitation to the European Commission urging the upgrading of the extremely important field of biomedical research, for the benefit of human health, the environment and animal welfare.

from Museum of Food and Drink (MOFAD) / Added

MOFAD Roundtable is a program from the Museum of Food and Drink (MOFAD) that explores controversial food issues through live debate and discussion. This event took place on October 16, 2014 at the Manny Cantor Center. Global meat consumption is projected to double by 2020 due to increased demand for animal protein and population growth. Other research suggests that livestock production accounts for nearly 20 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. These facts raise pressing questions: How large a role should animal agriculture play in our food system? Should the ideal human diet include meat, or should we focus on decreasing or eliminating meat consumption altogether? How will the ethical decisions we make today shape our diet in the future? The answers to these questions are hotly contested, but finding solutions is in everyone's interest. The fourth MOFAD Roundtable brought together a distinguished panel of experts and sparked a lively debate on the ethics of eating animals, the future of cultured meats and other non-meat alternatives, whether there can be "good" meat, and more. Panelists: Mark Budolfson, Princeton University Isha Datar, New Harvest Patrick Martins, Heritage Foods USA Peter Singer, Princeton University Dave Arnold, Museum of Food and Drink (Moderator)
