"Two Days in September" records the experiences of a couple very high contrast river days in Western North Carolina: one a traffic jam on a steep creek flowing brown with dam released water and the other a clear fall day on mountain rivers that ran brown from tannins leeched out of the autumn forest. Both days were excellent fun and very interesting for different reasons. Stay tuned through the end to see an unusual wildlife encounter with one of WNC's rare white squirrels.

The backyard was busy today. Lots of activity with birds, squirrels, rabbits. One highlight was a visit by a white squirrel. First sighting for me! The little guy was pretty fearless, coming up on the deck close to the window, and the other squirrels seemed scared of him/her. I hope it wasn't a bully situation! That will never do.

This is both a happy but very sad story. For those who have been following my photos for a while know that I’ve posted quite a few of our white squirrel, Wilson. We first saw Wilson in December of 2009, and he’s been living in our yard since then. We’re always glad to see him and got worried when we haven’t seen him in a while. This time of year most of the squirrels get “warbles” from bot flies. They are very large and grow under the skin before they eventually drop out, leaving an open cavity to heal. On August 23rd we were relieved to see Wilson, as we hadn’t seen him in about 10 days. Happiness quickly turned to sadness when we saw his condition. His whole body from his waist to his armpits was raw. He also had a place on his jaw that looked terrible. He could barely hop and had to rest every few steps. He ate a little and then very slowly made his way back towards his tree. It’s been 10 days and we haven’t seen him. I feel like I’ve lost a pet. Three days ago I looked out the window and saw a healthy white squirrel bounding up a tree. I could tell immediately it wasn’t Wilson and got my binocs. I could see he was young and saw two more squirrels with him. I realized that Wilson had fathered a white squirrel. I’ve named him Willie and he is a sport-model! He and his brother Rusty are playing in this video. Somehow their mother has communicated to them that it’s not okay to go to the ground yet. I did see Willie come down a pine early this morning and very briefly put his feet on the ground—acting as if the ground was going to burn his feet before he left the tree. He quickly ran back up. He seems to be more comfortable upside-down and free-hangs by his hind feet when he’s tasting anything and everything trying to figure out what’s edible.
