Originally aired October 19, 2010. Students can be reluctant readers for many reasons and using fiction and independent reading to engage them can be a great way to bring them into the wider community. In this webinar sponsored by Orca Book Publishers, attendees will hear from presenters in the library and education fields who have had success using fiction to reach at-risk and disengaged readers. The hour-long presentation will focus on hands-on tips for both school and public librarians and will touch on the research behind the benefits of using fiction in the classroom. Examples of practical classroom projects, such as Read 180 and lit circles, and the insights of a successful publisher of short novels are just some of the offerings in this program moderated by Gillian Engberg, Booklist’s Books for Youth managing editor/YA editor. Panelists include: • Carolyn Salonen, Program, Curriculum, and Instruction Consultant, Waterloo Region District School Board, Ontario, Canada • Rebecca English, Educator, Godwin Heights High School, Wyoming, Michigan • Amy J. Cheney, Librarian, Alameda County Library, Juvenile Hall, San Leandro, California • Andrew Wooldridge, Publisher, Orca Book Publishers

The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender by Leslye Walton Magical realism, lyrical prose, and the pain and passion of human love haunt this hypnotic generational saga. Foolish love appears to be the Roux family birthright, an ominous forecast for its most recent progeny, Ava Lavender. Ava -- in all other ways a normal girl -- is born with the wings of a bird. In a quest to understand her peculiar disposition and a growing desire to fit in with her peers, sixteen-year old Ava ventures into the wider world, ill-prepared for what she might discover and naive to the twisted motives of others. Others like the pious Nathaniel Sorrows, who mistakes Ava for an angel and whose obsession with her grows until the night of the summer solstice celebration. That night, the skies open up, rain and feathers fill the air, and Ava’s quest and her family’s saga build to a devastating crescendo. First-time author Leslye Walton has constructed a layered and unforgettable mythology of what it means to be born with hearts that are tragically, exquisitely human.

Sixteen-year-old Jansin Nordqvist is on the verge of graduating from the black ops factory known as the Academy. She's smart and deadly and knows three things with absolute certainty. She knows that when the world flooded and civilization retreated deep underground, there was no one left on the surface. She knows that the only species to thrive there is the toads, a primate/amphibian hybrid with a serious mean streak. Most of all, she knows there's no place on Earth where you can hide from the hypercanes, continent-sized storms that have raged for decades. Jansin has been lied to. On all counts. Faced with the truth in the form of a charismatic young survivor named Will, Jansin vows that her former masters will regret making her what she is… RELEASE DATE: July 1, 2014 (Strange Chemistry) [Video Credits] A Transient Mode production | Music: By Myself by Dan Phillipson | Additional CC sounds by: Owlstorm | guitarguy1985 | vartioh | xerana | dio_333 | bone666138 | mangiabambini | finnbuster | medialint

The Dreamers is actually the first in a 3 book series. This is the video I created as a fun way to tell the preamble to the main tail. I created a Kickstarter to get this first book created, but I had so much fun making the video that I thought I would post it here too. So if you want to know what this is all about, check out the Kickstarter video here: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/229521042/the-dreamers-a-ya-fantasy-adventure - Cryston
