The destinies of young women from all over the world intertwine in Paris as they embark on a roller-coaster ride of extremes in their search for love and money.
The youngest one, Xin, a beautiful and quiet Chinese girl, propelled from the slums of Shanghaï to the glittering world of Paris, discovers the wild and carefree lifestyle of a photographic model. Her life is a whirlwind of drugs, money, sex and love: too much of the first three, too little of the last.
Soon, cold reality hits her in the face. Paris, the famous “City of Light,” is also a giant meat market, producing and discarding young hopefuls at a terrifying speed. Xin’s most treasured possession, an old super-eight camera, is her constant companion. She uses it to capture people's intimate confessions and special moments, thus revealing her friends, Chloé, Ira and Sylwia. Xin's fragile world is shattered when her agent brutally rapes her. Xin, unable to work, winds up in a cheap boarding house living out of her suitcase.
Attempting to survive and to exorcise her pain, she finds herself sinking deeper into the underworld of bare skin and raw desire. Feverishly, desperately, she tries to pull herself from the path of self-destruction down which she is inexorably plunging, falling further and further away from love – just like Ira and Sylwia.
She becomes “Shanghaï Belle”. When her grandmother who raised her back in China needs to have urgent surgery in Europe, money becomes Xin's driving force, Nothing can stop her now. Her reserved and fragile appearance by day is a stark contrast to the dominatrix call girl she becomes at night when she dons her blond wig. Her growing contempt for men and her desperate need for affection, lead her to fall in love with Chloé, a spoilt, upper-class brat.
Chloé, as a defiant youth, always got what she wanted. She spits in the face of the world that greets her. She makes her own rules and lives a fast-paced, spontaneous lifestyle. A super bitch with a heart of gold, she uses drugs, booze, and outrageous shopping sprees as weapons to neutralize the ache from her lack of parental love.
Xin and Chloé's love story twists and turns like a mountain road and finally rockets into uncharted emotional territory. Faced with her complete lack of control over her life, Xin goes on a search for salvation, but she finds that she is addicted to flirting with danger and she is constantly looking for her next fix, getting more and more hopelessly lost until love comes knocking in the appearance of a guy she would never have normally noticed.
In the end, love conquers all.
