TolumiDE Biography

Born in Canada, raised in Nigeria, residing in Washington D.C., USA, TolumiDE is an award winning RnB/Soul/ Afro-Pop Singer-Songwriter. TolumiDE always had a passion for the arts; she graduated with a Bachelors of Fine Arts (Honors) from York University, Toronto, Canada and had previously honed her musical skills as a member of the cultural dance group at the Atlantic Hall Secondary School in Lagos, Nigeria. While in Canada, she was part of a Dancehall/Reggae/RnB/HipHop all female band ‘Woman Ah run Tins’, a 4 time Canadian Reggae Award nominee. TolumiDE (pronounced toe-lu-mee-day) is a name in her Yoruba native language which means ‘Thank You God, it is a merger of her first name ‘Tolulope’ and her last name ‘Olumide’. TolumiDE’s music showcases inflections of her African heritage, which translates through her soulful, gospel and poetic musical style and lyrics.
TolumiDE's Songs are mainly English lyrics, with the occasional interjection of African Languages such as Yoruba, Pidgin English, Igbo and Twi. TolumiDE is a soulful vocalist with a unique blend of Gospel, Jazz & Reggae reminiscent of India Arie, Mary Mary and Les Nubians stylings. Influenced in her childhood years by African legacies such as Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Onyeka Owenu and Christy Essien Igbokwe as well as RnB artists such as Anita Baker, Sade, Brandy, she offers a range of dynamic and audience grabbing performances and has gained new fans and rave reviews for her debut album, ‘My Love’ currently available on iTunes, Amazon CDbaby. ‘My Love', is a sonic collage of music genres: Urban Soul, RnB, Afro-pop, Inspiration with sprinklings of Jazz, Reggae. The accompanying video, for the title track 'My Love' directed by Tayo Abereoje from Black Royal Pictures has been in rotation on MTV Base, Channel O (South Africa), Trace (Europe), Gospel Music Channel (USA), MBOA TV, Nigezie and ONE Gospel TV and many online outlets. The video earned her a ‘Channel O’ Music Video Awards (South Africa) nomination in the Most Gifted R&B category.
Hit single, ‘Because you Know’ from TolumiDE's EP album, ‘Specialty’ released in 2008 was featured on The Green October Project - Volume 1 mix. She has also featured on ‘Oya!’ the first single released from Garden Theater's 'The Heartbeat' musical production. TolumiDE has performed at a number of concerts, festivals, churches and other prestigious venues such as Blues Alley, the Vancouver Jazz Festival, the Toronto Jazz Festival, the Nigerian Entertainment Awards, FestAfrica, the Canadian Reggae Music Awards. In addition to being a sought-after vocalist, TolumiDE sings with the Hallelujazz Project, and Toby Foyeh and Orchestra Africa, and renders the Nigerian, Canadian or American National Anthems when requested. Other acts she has opened for include Salif Keita, 2face Idibia, P-Square, D'Banj. The recipient of the coveted Nigeria Entertainment Award for Best Female R&B Artist, she’s already been recognized in the motherland as one of the brightest music stars of the day.
