URGENT, Inc . OVERVIEW
URGENT, Inc. is a 501 (c) (3) Miami, FL based youth and community development organization dedicated to empowering young minds to transform their communities. Guided by the principles of innovation, growth and transformation URGENT sees young people as the drivers of change and works to provide empowering opportunities to create the next generation of social change agents.
Shedia Nelson manages 4 programs and has directed, choreographed and coordinated more than 20 productions with URGENT, Inc. Most notable youth led play production series of "She Kept Her Bra On" in promoting teen dating violence awareness. In the summer of 2013, her short film adaptation of "Keeping it On" based on "She Kept Her Bra On: Chronicles of a Teenage Love Affair" debuted under the direction of Jalen James Acosta. Her role as an actress and screenwriter with the supporting dynamic original cast from the play was well received. In addition, she edits video and produces transmedia storytelling through interactive film. At Hawai'i Pacific University she obtained a Bachelors of Arts degree in Communications with a concentration in Theater.
During her senior year at Hawai'i Pacific University she toured with Up with People's Broadway style musical production, "A Common Beat". The international tour included a diverse cast of 130 from 23 countries performing over a hundred hours of community service in addition to the production in 73 cities and 8 countries on 2 continents. Highlights of the tour included performing songs in multi-languages before the pope in Rome, Italy and selected in lead dance roles in West and South African as well as a hip hop dance to benefit a youth-led organization on anti-violence, Stop All Violence Everywhere (SAVE). She is an accomplished dancer versed in West African, Ivory Coast, South African, belly dance and Brazilian samba where her performance and training extends over 14 years. To dance is poetic expression like painting a canvas of melody where the heart and soul is the instrument.
