Alex Weinress, who founded Hixon Films ten years ago after migrating to Australia from the US, is an award-winning writer/director who has directed a range of critically acclaimed content including narrative comedy television, feature documentaries, short films and web series. As the creative head of Hixon Films, Alex brings to each project his keen knowledge and understanding of both story and comedy to execute engaging and emotive material that connects with his audience.
Hixon Film’s latest short film, A FIRST DATE, won the Jury Award for Highly Commended Australian Short Film and the SBS Television Award at the Academy© accredited FLiCKERFEST Film Festival 2013. The film also won Best Comedy at New York ShortsFest and Heart of Gold International Film Festival 2013. In 2011, a web series Hixon Films produced, SEBASTIEN INTERNATIONAL, was nominated for a Gold Lion at Cannes.
From 2007-2010 Weinress wrote (developed) and directed two series of narrative comedy television CHANDON PICTURES for The Movie Network (Australia). In 2008 Lionsgate secured worldwide distribution and format rights for the series, and has gone on to distribute the show to networks internationally, including UKTV (Britain), The Sundance Channel (US) and The ABC (Australia). CHANDON PICTURES has gone on to win an AWGIE (Australian Writers Guild Award) for best narrative comedy as well as nominations for an AFI (Australian Film Institute), LOGIE and ADG (Australian Directors Guild) award for best comedy series.
In 2006 Alex won 1st Prize at the Sony Tropfest Film Festival (Australia) for his short film CARMICHAEL & SHANE. Hixon Films produced the film with Alex directing. The film went on to win the Audience Award at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival as well as screenings at the US Comedy Arts Festival, Telluride, Tribeca and Edinburgh Film Festivals. In 2012, the film was selected as one of the top 16 Tropfest films of all time to compete in the All-Stars competition at Tropfest Las Vegas.
In 2002, Weinress produced and directed the critically acclaimed documentary feature, THE LAST GAME. The film premiered at the 2002 South by Southwest Film Festival, won Best Documentary at the 2002 Sonoma Valley Film Festival, and captured the Special Jury Award at the 2003 Worldfest in Houston. The film aired on ESPN (US) and was released on DVD internationally in 2003.
Based in Sydney, Hixon Films has produced content for multiple international brands, including MICROSOFT, QANTAS, HYUNDAI, eHARMONY, JACOB’S CREEK and COMMONWEALTH BANK of AUSTRALIA.
