    Try setting virtualedit and see if it works. I can't make this same thing fail for me no matter what I do. You could also try putting the cursor on line 1 and hitting 100P instead.

    use wP instead. You can also put it in a macro to repeat it easier. Say you're on '10' and you've got a 0 in the register. Now 'qaPwq5@a'

    Yup, that's normal. If you want to continue the macro, move on to the next file and run it again. What I generally do is load up files that match a command-line 'grep' and then it's guaranteed to never cause me an issue.
