ABOUT ADAM WAKELY
Adam doesn’t remember a time when he wasn’t listening to The Beatles. Growing up, his older brothers seemed to play their music non-stop, and it has stuck with him to this day. When his father was a teen, he played in a band called The Stripes. His dad later helped to create a cover band in the 70s that frequently rehearsed in the family’s home. Adam took piano lessons for a while as a child, although he preferred to play by ear, and along the way he also learned to play bass and guitar. Music has always played a big part in Adam’s life.
On December 8, 1980, John Lennon was murdered, and Adam responded by digging through his older brothers’ Beatles records, playing them over and over. “I wasn't only inspired by The Beatles’ music and writing,” says Wakely. “I was just as inspired by their producer, George Martin, and their song creation process. I became an artist and producer at the same time, and, even today, I do both.” As a teen, Adam spent much of his after-school time in a makeshift studio in the basement of his home.
In the mid-80s, Adam connected with a band called The Motivators and “It was my first exposure to playing live music with others,” he says. Then, in the late 80s, he joined Double Image with some new friends, and they played the cover band circuit for 20 years. During this time, Adam moved to a home where he was able to turn an empty garage into a full recording studio and live music room. He invested in some pro studio gear and started to record other bands, as well as his own music. Adam also ventured into video production "I learned a lot from editing videos and using the computer. I did not know the importance of my video editing experience at the time, but it prepared me for what I do now.” Once Adam stopped doing video production, he quit the cover band and started using his computer knowledge and skill to do full audio production with computers. “My previous experience really jump-started me into music and audio production,” he says. "Since my technical skill and experience were in place, I could also focus on my interest in writing and creating my own music.”
In 2007, Adam began recording in his home studio, also collaborating with other artists through the internet and social media websites. ”The only way for me to record at the time was through online music collaborations,” says Adam. “We sent files to each other and synced up tracks. I was the collector of tracks for projects, so I was able to mix tracks into projects with artists around the world. Internet music collaboration became a process I still use today with artists I have remixed globally and locally.” Meeting other artists on the internet has led to collaborations with many talented artists.
Just before social networking became big, Adam heard an mp3 of a song from a cousin in Norway he never knew about: Maja Arnøy. The two connected, and after hearing a subsequent recording that she sent him, he was determined to record with her. The two exchanged a few emails, and Adam sent Maja a song he had written, asking her to do a vocal track. It took a couple of years and the right timing, but Maja finally agreed to do the song. The song turned out well, and Adam and Maja have continued working together with Maja writing lyrics and coming up with ideas for their songs. “The connection between my cousin and me has grown into something very special and magical,” says Wakely.
