We hope by making the talks available free to everyone, there may even be lives saved but at the least more awareness about the harms from medicines. Health professionals hear a lot about the benefits and we hope by students of medicine being directed to the films, they will be more able to discern between marketing information and reality of the extent of ADRs in the community.
We are delighted that Simon Maxwell has directed medical students in Edinburgh to the films as an education resource, his research having detected unease in the student population of their lack of knowledge to be competent at prescribing, let alone recognising ADRs. Edinburgh Universities e learning pharmacology course is in need of funding and much needed.
Please ask your local university or medical school to use the films as an educational resource.
Good doctors listen to patient's experiences, some of those good health professionals are on our videos.
The personal stories, kindly told to us by delegates at our conference may surprise some people.
You may find out why your patients or family members seem unwell. Watch all the videos for they are full of information vital to the health and wellbeing of us all.
Adverse Psychiatric Reactions Information Link (APRIL charity), creates awareness and collates information about adverse psychiatric side effects of everyday medicines and anaesthetics. For more information see our web site april.org.uk
We hope that by making the conference talks freely available and sharing the painful experiences and some stories of hope, told to us, that we can save suffering - Awareness Saves Lives !
Iatrogenic (treatment induced) illness is a Public Health
Crisis. Admissions to UK hospitals following Adverse reactions rose by 78% over the past 10 years.
Until Medical Education is improved and includes Pharmacology and recognition of adverse side effects for all students, unfortunately the harms caused by medicines an anaesthetics will continue.
Medicines for indigestion, acne, pain, infections, cholesterol, malaria depression, ADHD and other psychiatric conditions as well as anaesthetics may cause serious mental changes as well as physical problems: plus adverse reactions, or withdrawal symptoms caused by antidepressants, some pain killers, tranquilisers and other psychotropic drugs.
APRIL charity is grateful to the Big Lottery 'Awards for All' fund for supporting our conference.
Many thanks to relatives and friends who volunteered and helped make the day a success and the speakers who came because they care. Only some expences were offered. By keeping costs down, people with low income due to iatrogenic illness, were able to attend.
