Recently graduating from Manchester School of Art with a BA (Hons) degree in Embroidery, Bella Leonard's work explores the potential for stitch as a contemporary form of ornamentation, on an unexpected scale. Using traditional hand-stitch techniques with modern technology and unconventional materials, she reinforces the possibility for embroidery skills to be practiced and installed in the modern environment.
Inspired by historic domestic textiles and Manchester's urban environment, her practice questions the role of hand-sewn embroidery within our society. The clear acrylic forms the structure for the decorative pattern and subverts hand stitch's assumed textile associations. Sculptural stitched patterns embellish interior and exterior surface and space, celebrating the hand made.
