Stan Humphries has broad experience in technical photography. Over a career in experimental plasma physics and pulsed-power technology, he developed a variety of state-of-the-art fast imaging devices. Contributions include work on holographic infrared interferometry, nanosecond electro-optical cameras, adaptive optics techniques for electron beams and imaging spectrometers for intense ion beams. His three-dimensional computer codes OmniTrak and GamBet are world standards for simulations of electron optics and X-ray imaging devices.
He is the author of over 150 journal publications and the textbooks Principles of Charged-particle Acceleration (John Wiley, New York, 1986), Charged Particle Beams (John Wiley, New York, 1990) and Field Solutions on Computers (Taylor and Francis, Boca Raton, 1997). He received a B.S. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley. He was elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. He is a professor emeritus in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of New Mexico and President of Field Precision LLC, an engineering software company.
Humphries has explored and photographed the mountains and canyons of the American Southwest for over forty years. His portfolio includes color and monochrome images of remote backcountry locations. He divides his time between Albuquerque (New Mexico), Abiquiu (New Mexico) and Estes Park (Colorado).
