My work is about significance. How highly significant moments for one individual can be buried in the noise of the world.
Most of our waking moments are dismissed as banal or unimportant as we move from one event to the next. Our culture is made up of consensual ideas of significance. And yet, just below the surface of this consensus about who or what is important, lies our individual story, our personal triumphs and disasters.
Although it may be trite to say that each of us is the hero of our own story, all too often we find ourselves crushed by the weight of external norms of significance. Instead of seeing the magnificence of our own lives, we are encouraged by mainstream media see ourselves and our stories as inadequate in comparison with those at the centre of the world's attention.
My work is about focusing on those lost moments, about piercing the illusions of slickness in mainstream culture and giving people permission to be magnificent.
